Japan: vending machines offer free Wi-Fi

Japanese drinks giant Asahi has decided to put its thousands of vending machines to better use by turning them into Wi-Fi hotspots, a move which should prove popular in a country where such hotspots are few and far between.

In a country where vending machines can be found not only on every street corner, but in between every street corner, across from every street corner and beside every street corner (in other words, there are a lot of vending machines), the idea of turning them into Wi-Fi hotspots is a stroke of genius.

The new machines are being introduced in Japan by drinks company Asahi over the next 12 months, with plans for more in the coming years. The Wi-Fi signal from the machines should cover a distance of around 50 meters and will be available for free. Users won?t even have to buy something from the machine to get onto the network.

The signal will be available for 30 minutes before it cuts out, though in the oppressively hot and humid Japanese summers it?s unlikely anyone will be hanging around outside for that long. Asahi will be hoping they might even buy a cold drink when they?re done.

The drinks company, which currently has around a quarter of a million vending machines stationed around Japan, will initially set up 1,000 of the Wi-Fi-enabled machines in major conurbations across the country, with the aim of having some 10,000 machines up and running by 2017.

Whereas in the US free Wi-Fi can be found in the majority of restaurants, cafes and hotels, it may come as a surprise to some that in a tech-loving country like Japan such a service is still rare ? and unless that changes, we might soon begin seeing large crowds of people huddled around vending machines doing something besides buying drinks from it.

Analysis: N.Korea's missile-maker seen in key role in new regime (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? During the funeral ceremonies for North Korean leader Kim Jong-il this week, the man in charge of the isolated state's missile program and possibly its nuclear plans, paid a quiet visit to the mausoleum where the body lay in state.

Little is known about elderly and silver-haired Ju Kyu-chang, but he appears to be a key member of the North Korean team developing nuclear weapons.

The European Union has named the 73-year-old, who is believed to have trained as a metal alloy specialist and studied in Russia, as one of the individual North Koreans to attract sanctions slapped on the rogue communist state.

He was given two important posts in the regime in recent years, which analysts say were part of Kim Jong-il's moves after he suffered a stroke to set a succession plan in place and ensure safe custody of the nuclear weapons.

"I would equate Ju with General Leslie Groves, who headed the U.S. Manhattan Project that produced atomic bombs during World War Two," said Larry Niksch, who has tracked North Korea for the non-partisan U.S. Congressional Research Service for 43 years.

"Ju runs the day-to-day programs to develop missiles and probably nuclear weapons."

Ju was ranked 20th on the list of the national funeral committee for Kim Jong-il, an indicator of his stature. Just above him in 19th position was Jang Song-thaek, the uncle of new leader Kim Jong-un and the man seen as the power behind the throne.

According to the European Union, Ju had oversight of the two tests of North Korea's intermediate-range Taepodong-2 ballistic missiles in 2006 and 2009. Less is known about his connection to the development of nuclear weapons.

But the International Crisis Group (ICG) said in a 2009 report on North Korea that Ju "is believed to be in charge of the nuclear weapons development program."

It said Ju's 2009 promotion to the National Defense Commission (NDC), the supreme leadership council, was probably linked to a move to put him in charge of an independent entity with custody of North Korea's nuclear bombs when they were developed.

Daniel Pinkston, one of the authors of the ICG report, told Reuters there was no information on whether the new "command and control" body for nuclear weapons had been set up.

But he said of Ju: "He is close to the regime leadership because of his political loyalty to the Kim family and the party, in addition to his technical expertise regarding the SLV (space launch vehicle) and satellite programs and the nuclear weapons program."

MACHINE-BUILDING

Officially, Ju is director of the oddly named Korean Workers' Party Machine-Building Industry Department, which he has been associated with since the 1960s. But his power stems from the NDC post and also his being named to the Workers' Party Central Military Commission in 2010.

He accompanied Kim Jong-il on a trip to Russia, according to media reports.

"Ju is in charge of managing the North's ballistic missiles," said Cho Min, at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.

"Some people think he may be involved in the North's nuclear programs, but I am less confident about that. But on the other hand, ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons are inseparable."

Analysts say Kim Jong-un will be in no hurry to make any changes and that Ju should remain in place for some time.

"The fact that he is still there means his father (Kim Jong-il) gave him the seal of approval as others considered threats or not loyal enough were replaced or retired over the past year or two," said Ralph Cossa, president of the U.S. think tank Pacific Forum CSIS.

"Not sure where he fits in the pecking order but he is clearly among the top rung."

But Ju is likely to have not much more than a bit part in any decision on the actual deployment of missiles or nuclear weapons.

Kim Jong-un and the close coterie around him, including his uncle Jang, aunt Kim Kyong-hui and military chief Ri Yong-ho, are likely to call the shots.

Kim Jong-un has already been named the supreme commander of the military, and "should have ultimate command and control of the nuclear arsenal," said the ICG's Pinkston. "I believe that is the case."

The unpredictable state, which threatened on Friday to turn arch rival South Korea into "a sea of revengeful fire," has rattled the region with two nuclear tests in the past five years and its missile program.

It is believed to have about 700 short-range Scud-type missiles and about 320 medium-range Nodongs. It is said to have amassed enough plutonium for about half a dozen bombs but is now believed to be working on producing highly enriched uranium, the other kind of fissile material used in nuclear bombs.

Niksch, the U.S. expert, says the North probably would need as little as one to two years to miniaturize and mount a nuclear warhead atop its medium-range Nodong missile once it has produced enough highly enriched uranium.

Holiday Bowl preview, matchups: No. 24 Texas (7-5) vs. California (7-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. today, Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego

Line: UT by 3

TV, radio: ESPN, KTKR-AM 760 (Longhorns broadcast), KZDC-AM 1250 (ESPN Radio broadcast)

Online: holidaybowl.com

Storyline: Both the Longhorns and Golden Bears had aspirations of finishing their seasons at a more glamorous bowl game but will have to settle on shooting for an eighth victory and Top 25 finish instead. Cal ended its season playing its best, winning three of its last four and nearly upsetting Stanford, while UT dropped three of its last four.

Numbers: UT has won seven of its last nine bowl games and is 8-4 in the postseason under Mack Brown. ... Cal went 5-2 in seven consecutive bowl appearances under Jeff Tedford before staying home last year. ... The Longhorns lead the series against Cal 4-0, but the teams haven?t met since UT won 56-15 in 1970.

MATCHUPS

Express-News staff writer Mike Finger breaks down what to expect in tonight?s Holiday Bowl:

Quarterbacks

Zach Maynard struggled early in his first season as Cal?s starter, but he completed 68 percent of his passes with a 154.3 rating in his last four games. UT?s time-share setup with David Ash and Case McCoy remains in flux, with neither having done anything to seize control of the job.

Edge: California

Running backs

Diminutive junior Isi Sofele is only 5-foot-8, but he?s been tough for Cal opponents to bring down, racking up 1,270 yards this season. But when UT freshmen Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron are healthy ? and the Longhorns insist they are ? few college running tandems are better.

Edge: Texas

Receivers/Tight ends

Even after facing Ryan Broyles, Justin Blackmon and Kendall Wright, UT coach Mack Brown said Cal?s Keenan Allen might be the best receiver the Longhorns have seen this year. UT?s Jaxon Shipley is a game-breaker, too, but might be limited by a knee injury.

Edge: California

Offensive line

The Bears? unit is more experienced, and left tackle Mitchell Schwartz bullied his way to first-team All Pac-12 honors. David Snow anchors a young UT line that improved dramatically during the season but is still prone to occasional lapses.

Edge: California

Defensive line

End Trevor Guyton is the star of a three-man front that helped Cal rank 26th nationally in total defense. UT?s defense was just a bit better overall (ranking 15th), and Jackson Jeffcoat, Alex Okafor and Kheeston Randall were big reasons.

Edge: Texas

Linebackers

This is the home of each team?s defensive leader and most productive player. Cal?s Mychal Kendricks was the Pac-12 player of the year and had a solid running buddy in D.J. Holt. UT?s Emmanuel Acho was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and got lots of help from Keenan Robinson.

Edge: Even

Secondary

Playing in conferences heavily reliant on the pass, both teams have secondaries accustomed to being tested. The Longhorns were better statistically, with both nickel back Kenny Vaccaro and cornerback Carrington Byndom earning first-team all-conference honors.

Edge: Texas

Special teams

Cal is much better than UT at punting (with All-Pac 12 honoree Bryan Anger) and covering kickoffs, while the Longhorns have a huge advantage in the return game. And kickers Giorgio Tavecchio and Justin Tucker both have 85-percent accuracy and 50-plus-yard range.

Edge: Even

Coaching/intangibles

Two of the longest-tenured coaches in major college football, Cal?s Jeff Tedford and UT?s Mack Brown have set higher standards for their programs than the ones reached by their teams this year. Both are hoping to return to their peak, and Brown?s was a bit higher.

Edge: Texas

Mike Finger: UT 20, Cal 17

E! president: Fans aspire to be like Kardashians

E! President Suzanne Kolb owes much of her network's success this year to an extremely divisive family.

Hours of Kardashian-centered programming -- especially Kim Kardashian's start of a notoriously short marriage -- fueled ratings for the network that Kolb took over the network in July after serving as president of marketing, news and online for both E! and Style.

Kolb talked to us about the Kardashians, why people watch their shows, E!'s plans to introduce a one-hour dramedy and the network's place in the NBC Universal corporate family since Comcast acquired the company in January.

You've probably seen as much research as anyone into why the Kardashians are so popular with so many viewers. Can you explain why people watch their shows?

At their core, the Kardashians are an incredibly bonded, loving, large family who live an incredibly large life. And if you actually look at the history of television, there's a pretty large number of families with that blend resonating with viewers. This just happens to be the first reality show that does it.

In many ways when you look at the year ... there's obviously been a lot of major events in the Kardashian family's lives. It's just an incredibly fascinating drama that's played out. But at its core, you know that they're going to end up around that dinner table together. ... I think there's something emotionally aspirational around that family dynamic and visually aspirational about the way that family lives.

You mentioned aspirational viewers. Some viewers watch shows because they want to be like the people on the screen, and some to laugh at them. Are the Kardashians' viewers in the first group?

From every piece of research I've seen, people aspire to be them or to befriend them.

So there's no section of the audience watching the way they watch "Real Housewives," saying, 'I can't believe how trashy this is'?

I'm sure there are some people out there. I always think it's funny when people say they don't like a show and then they can tell you the name of every character and every plot. ... There are other reality shows out there where you're watching the show primarily to see really bad behavior, and with the Kardashians you're not really watching for that.

I mean, they've definitely made their mistakes here or there. They've been very open about them in the last couple of months... But you don't watch for them to have bad behavior. You watch for sort of over-the-top situations and really a very soapy family dynamic. Nobody's flipping a table.

Did you take seriously the petition to cancel the Kardashian shows?

We take every viewer comment seriously, but no. We did not consider not to be in business with the Kardashians.

What's your plan for getting into scripted programming?

We are not expecting the scripted shows to actually premiere until 2013. 2012 will be our year of developing and piloting to select at least one scripted show to go on the air in '13...We're trying to look at something that really fits into pop culture now and fits into that landscape. We're not necessarily looking for anything that's extremely on the nose of Hollywood celebrity. We're looking at a broader range than I think some people might think we're looking at...We're looking at starting a 60 minute [show] as our ideal scenario and we're looking at kind of a dramedy. I don't think we'd put anything on the air that's super, super dark..."

Do you think E! has become a proving ground for NBC, given the sitcom based on "Chelsea Lately" host Chelsea Handler and Joel McHale of "The Soup" starring on "Community"?

You can add Whitney Cummings to that list too, as one of the people who was on the "Chelsea" roundtable. I think that's actually a sign of E!'s ability to be at the forefront of what's going on in terms of pop culture and talent. Yes, we cover many of the people that have already become established. But we also take gambles on people earlier in their careers and see what happens from there.

What I think is the nicest part is these people are able to expand their careers without leaving their home base. Joel McHale has gone into "Community," which is great, and we're happy for him. But he still does "The Soup" and "The Soup" is thriving. Chelsea is expanding what she's doing and at the same time we've just ensured that she'll be doing "Chelsea Lately" for several years to come.

We've got a track record for finding talent and then we have a track record of keeping them as their careers are still growing.

What are your other goals for E!?

We're definitely looking ahead to expand and move it to an entirely new level and take advantage of this momentum that we have at the end of 2011. What you're going to see in 2012 is us taking steps toward that... Moving "The Soup" to Wednesdays after 7 years on Friday is a big step for us. I think you'll continue to see us nurture "Chelsea Lately" and "Fashion Police" and news, and at the same time I think you'll see us continue to look and I believe find the right companion to build upon the Kardashian momentum.

Sometimes when people talk about where a network can grow or evolve, there's this belief that somehow that comes from a point of weakness. And I think on E! right now, what I'm really proud of is we have so many things that are working. And then to have the opportunity corporately to feel like you've got a window of time where people will support more dramatic growth, then that's an exciting point to be at.

Oil sands OK starts option clock for Athabasca (Reuters)

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) ? Athabasca Oil Sands Corp has won regulatory approval for its MacKay River oil sands project, opening a one-month window that could result in its state-owned Chinese partner taking full control of the development.

As part of a previous funding deal, Athabasca and its joint-venture partner, PetroChina, have options to trade the Canadian company's 40 percent interest in the 150,000 barrel a day project in northern Alberta at a strike price of C$680 million ($665 million).

If either the put or call options get exercised, Athabasca would have to repay loans advanced by PetroChina, which totaled about C$468 million at the end of September.

With approvals from the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board and the provincial environment ministry in hand, both sides have 30 days to decide whether to pull the trigger on the put or call options. Athabasca has said that if options for MacKay River and another larger project, called Dover, are exercised, three of its other, 100-percent owned, prospects would be fully funded.

Athabasca's projects are part of a rush of developments mixing Canadian resources and Asian money.

"Obviously it's a very material event for us and I really can't comment on the possible outcome, but both parties are looking at the possibilities," Sveinung Svarte, Athabasca's chief executive, told Reuters.

Athabasca has said that if all positions remain the same, it would spend C$187 million on MacKay River in 2012. Construction on the 35,000 bpd first phase is scheduled to start next month with first production slated for 2014.

MacKay River is a steam-assisted gravity drainage project, in which steam is pumped into the ground to loosen up the tar-like bitumen so it can flow to the surface in wells.

Construction costs are expected to be around C$37,000 per daily barrel of crude, which is in line with Devon Energy Corp's recently announced expansion of its Jackfish project, Svarte said.

That would put the cost of first phase of MacKay River at about C$1.3 billion.

Steam-driven projects are not as labor- and materials-intensive as those involving mining, bitumen extraction and upgrading plants, so they are not as susceptible to cost overruns, he said. Also, much of the equipment is assembled in the United States, away from the higher costs associated with Alberta's growing boom.

PetroChina is one of several Asian companies with investments in Canadian oil sands assets and developers.

China, Thailand, South Korea and Japan are among countries flocking to Canada as a stable source of energy supply and one that has welcomed foreign investments. A snag so far, however, has been the lack of a supply route to the Pacific from the oil sands deposits of Alberta.

Next month, public hearings are scheduled to begin for the first new project aimed at shipping large volumes of oil sands-derived crude to Canada's West Coast, Enbridge Inc's C$5.5 billion Northern Gateway proposal.

Athabasca shares fell 1 Canadian cent to C$12.11 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

Giants coach downplays injury, ready for Dallas

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Walking into his news conference to kick off an NFC East showdown week with the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Coughlin couldn't hide the injury.

There was a noticeable limp in his left leg, one that seemingly will bother the 65-year-old New York Giants coach for weeks and might require medical intervention down the road.

Coughlin didn't care. He wasn't going to discuss the extent of the injury sustained in Saturday's game with the Jets when he was slammed into by D.J Ware after the Giants running back was hit out of bounds.

All that was important was that the Giants (8-7) are playing Dallas (8-7) Sunday night at MetLife Stadium for the NFC East title and a playoff berth. The loser goes home.

"Never better. I may not be able to run for a while," Coughlin said of his health, adding later that he doesn't discuss injuries.

Still, Coughlin had some fun. When asked about Ware, he joked Ware was no longer with the team.

He blamed himself for not paying attention and taking his eye off the play, even though he admitted the late push that resulted in a penalty came 10 yards out of bounds. He even noted he was in for treatment Sunday, just to check up on his players who were hurt in Saturday's 29-14 win that gave the Giants bragging right over Rex Ryan and the brash Jets, the team that co-owns the stadium where they play.

The man who also led the Giants to a Super Bowl title in 2008 and missed the playoffs the past two seasons added he has no intention of coaching from the press box Sunday night. He will be on the field with his players in this all-or-nothing game.

"This is a long and storied rivalry, no doubt about it," Coughlin said of the Giants-Cowboys series. "There have been some great, great games between the two franchises. The one a couple of weeks ago was an outstanding game and example of that. We prepare ourselves for just that type of high intensity, outstanding, high level of performance on both sides."

The Giants rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final 5:41 to beat the Cowboys in Dallas on Dec. 11. However, Coughlin reminded his team Monday that Dallas beat the Giants in the Meadowlands last season after losing in Texas.

Defensive end Dave Tollefson said Coughlin has been the one person the players can count on in what has been an inconsistent year.

The fourth-quarter injury on Saturday was yet another example.

Player after player was amazed at Coughlin's toughness after taking the hit, which looked nasty. Trainers forced him to go to the bench to be examined, but he fought them all the way and quickly limped back to his coaching position along the sideline.

"You know his actions, obviously, Saturday was a great example to the public," Tollefson said. "He would never ask us to do anything that he himself would (not) be willing to do, though he is twice the age of our youngest guy. Seriously, he means what he says and he says a lot of things that he does say, there is conviction in his voice. So you can really tell he means it."

And that he led to loyalty toward a coach who let his players know where they stand.

"You don't want to let him down because he is willing to do anything he can to not let us down," Tollefson said.

Coughlin's message to the team Monday was simple: Forget about the win over the Jets. If you want to get into the postseason, win on Sunday.

"We are all all-in," said defensive captain Justin Tuck, who seemingly shook off all his injuries and played his best game of the season against the Jets. "Coach Coughlin is the same as all of us. I know that leg is banged up a little bit, but he wasn't showing any ill effects today and came in excited about the opportunity that we have this week."

Outspoken safety Antrel Rolle went home to Miami for Christmas, and texted his coach to see how he was feeling Sunday.

"Some of our toughness definitely rubbed off on him," Rolle quipped before getting serious. "He is a tough guy. He kept it going. If our coach is strong enough to go out there and fight and keep it going and hang through a situation like that, we're younger. Why can't we do it?" That's the mentality I have."

Some of the players could not help but tease Coughlin a little bit. One of the things he always says to them is: no toughness, no championship."

The coach heard that a couple of times after being hurt.

His age also was a target.

"I don't think he has taken a hit like that since World War II," Tollefson said of Coughlin, who was born a year after the hostilities ended. "For him to bounce back is impressive."

He'll tape it up if he has to," added guard Chris Snee, the coach's son-in-law. "It didn't look very good but I guess it could have been a lot worse."

NOTES: Coughlin hopes to have WR Mario Manningham (knee) back for the regular-season finale. ...DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle) is a little more iffy. ... Rolle, CB Corey Webster and DE Jason Pierre-Paul all played over 100 plays against the Jets.

Kim Jong-un takes charge of the military and Workers' Party

PYONGYANG // Kim Jong-il's son was identified yesterday as the head of a top decision-making body of the ruling Workers' Party, a post that now gives him authority over political as well as military matters in North Korea.

A week after state media reported Kim's December 17 death, the campaign to install successor Kim Jong-un was gaining momentum.

On Saturday, state media referred to him as "supreme leader" of North Korea's 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him.

Yesterday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party - a post that appears to make him the top official in the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong-il ruled North Korea as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defence Commission.

His father, the North Korea founder Kim Il-sung, meanwhile, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong-un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor, is the third generation Kim to rule the country.

He was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

People continued lining up yesterday in central Kim Il-sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il-sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong-il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funereal flowers.

Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from kiosks.

South Koreans were among the mourners. The widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong-il in 2000, and the Hyundai Group chairwoman, Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North, each led delegations that drove across the heavily fortified border to Pyongyang.

ISRAEL: Exercising the Right to Torture

JERUSALEM, Dec 27, 2011 (IPS) - In a case that has highlighted Israel?s abuse of Palestinian detainees, an Israeli military court recently acquitted a Palestinian man after it became clear that Israeli interrogators used excessive physical and psychological abuse as a way to coerce a confession from him.

Ayman Hamida, a resident of Ezariya in East Jerusalem, was accused of various security offences, including shooting at an Israeli border police outpost in September 2009. He was indicted for 17 offences, based largely on a confession obtained during a 40-day interrogation period.

In his testimony before an Israeli military court, however, Hamida asked to retract his confession because he said he was threatened with administrative detention, his family members were threatened, and he was beaten, spat on, choked and deprived of food by Israeli interrogators.

"They intimidated him, saying that they will bring his sister and interrogate her. Also, they arrested his brother and tried to use this in order to get a confession," explained Labib Habib, an attorney who, with other attorney Tarek Barghout, represented Hamida.

"After that, he was brought to someone who said he was a regular prisoner, but in fact, he was working with the Shabak (Israeli secret service). They hit him and said that he has to prove that he is a good guy, confessing what he did," Habib told IPS.

Israeli daily newspaper Ha?aretz reported that Israeli military court judge Maj. Amir Dahan wrote in his judgment that "the interrogation was neither ideal nor respectful, and that harsh and problematic measures were used in a manner and frequency that deprived (Hamida) of his free will.

"This time (they went) over the top, and the defendant was forced into telling his interrogators anything in order to stop the interrogation, to end the veiled threats and to give him even the slightest hope."

According to Bana Shouthry, legal director at the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), abuse of Palestinian detainees by the Israeli General Security Services (GSS), also known as the Shin Bet or Shabak, according to its Hebrew acronym, is widespread.

"The vast majority of Palestinians are interrogated by the security services. Their interrogation is being done while the security services use emotional and psychological pressure. While they are held incommunicado, they are held under very degrading, humiliating and inhuman conditions, with no access to natural light or even natural conditions," Shouthry told IPS.

In 1987, the Landau Commission ? an Israeli governmental commission charged with examining the interrogation methods used by the GSS ? found that the continued use of "physical force" in interrogations was acceptable.

Twelve years later, in 1999, the Israeli high court finally prohibited torture of any kind in Israel, and outlawed certain interrogation techniques. In "ticking time bomb" situations, however, the court found that the use of physical force could be justified.

"The High Court?s decision from 1999 didn?t limit it only to situations where someone is suspected to know about a bomb that will explode within a few hours, but also to people who may know about others, who know about others, who know about a bomb that could explode within weeks and months. So it?s a very wide definition," Shouthry explained.

"De facto, only 15 percent of PCATI?s cases are actually considered by the authorities as ticking bombs. All the others are tortured because this is the way the security services know how to get information from Palestinians."

She added that more troubling than the abuse itself is the total impunity under which it takes place; Israeli human rights groups have reported that while more than 700 complaints alleging abuse of detainees by GSS agents were reported from 2001 to 2009, the Israeli State Attorney?s Office hasn?t opened a single investigation.

"Systematically, all these complaints were closed without opening a criminal investigation based on an internal check done by the GSS themselves," Shouthry said.

"Israel fails to meet its obligation to investigate every single suspected use of torture. They apply a legal mechanism that leads to total impunity for those commit torture, and the vast majority of detainees don?t want to go to court or even submit a complaint because they know that this will not help them."

According to attorney Labib Habib, the case of Ayman Hamida will hopefully set a precedent whereby other Palestinian detainees will come forward to report abuse, and will also encourage Israeli courts to better protect their rights.

"It?s a very important precedent. I hope it will encourage others to talk, and for (Israeli courts and judges) to be courageous enough to say the truth and to make the right conclusions from this truth," Habib said.

"But even in (Hamida?s) case, when the court said the truth very loudly, we didn?t hear and we don?t know about any steps taken against the interrogators. Impunity is still going on, and more steps need to be taken in order to punish such measures and to make sure it doesn?t happen again." (END)

Ian Foster named All Blacks Assistant Coach

Former Chiefs Coach Ian Foster is the new Assistant Coach of the All Blacks while All Blacks great Grant Fox is to join the All Blacks as a Selector, it was announced today.

Meanwhile, former Hurricanes Assistant Coach and NZRU resource coach Brian "Aussie" McLean will join the All Blacks coaching staff as Defence Coach, with a Skills Coach to also be added to the team.

Ian Foster coached the Chiefs in more than 100 Super Rugby matches from 2004 through to this year, and also co-coached the Junior All Blacks.

"This is a great honour to work with the All Blacks. I'm thankful for the faith that Steve Hansen and the Board have shown in me," he said.

"I think the time I have had with the Chiefs and the Junior All Blacks has given me a taste of coaching at an international level, and this is a huge privilege for me as I look to fill Smithy's (Wayne Smith) big shoes," Foster added.

Fox, who played 46 Tests for the All Blacks from 1985 - 1993, will step down from his current position on the Blues franchise Board to take up the All Blacks Selector job.

He will join Hansen and Foster on the All Blacks selection panel which will select the All Blacks squads for each of their regular campaigns - the Steinlager Series June Tests, the renamed Investec Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri Nations) and the All Blacks' Air New Zealand End of Year Tour.

"The chance to be involved with the All Blacks again - a team I care passionately about - was too good an opportunity to turn down and I was flattered when Steve called me and said he wanted me to be a selector," Fox said.

Fox added he was "excited by the challenges" the All Blacks faced. "They climbed their Everest this year and now the aim will be to maintain that success. That's going to be the exciting thing for me."

Aussie McLean said: "This is a huge responsibility which I have been given and I'm honoured and humbled. I'm excited at what lies ahead and ready for the challenge."

New All Blacks Coach Steve Hansen said he was delighted to be able to announce the new positions.

"Grant Fox is not only a legend of our game but also one of the most astute people. I wanted to find someone independent from the team who had the ability to break down a player's game, analyse their strengths and weaknesses and bring a fresh viewpoint to the selection process, and he's that man."

In selecting his coaching staff, Hansen said he firstly looked at what the team's needs were, the coaching expertise that was available, and those who could also complement his skillset.

"I then cross referenced that with coaches both here in New Zealand and overseas before finalising the coaching structure and personnel, which I believe is the best team to take the All Blacks forward."

The Skills Coach for the All Blacks will be announced in the New Year.

Biographies

All Blacks Assistant Coach Ian Foster was Chiefs coach from 2004 to 2011 taking the team to the Semifinals in his first year and the Final in 2009. He was also Co-

Coach of the Junior All Blacks from 2005-2007, during which time the team won a two-Test Series against Australia A, the inaugural IRB Pacific Five Nations tournament and the expanded Pacific Nations Cup. He also co-coached an All Blacks trial team in 2005. A former player, Foster is the most-capped Waikato player (148 games) and also played 28 games for the Chiefs.

All Blacks Defence Coach Brian "Aussie" McLean is one of New Zealand's most well-regarded coaches. He has had more than 20 years coaching experience from club to international level, most recently as Assistant Coach of Samoa at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He lead the New Zealand Under 19 team to five world championships, including three victories, won titles with Canterbury in 2001 and 2004, provided analysis and coaching for the Crusaders (1999 - 2000) and was Assistant Coach with the Hurricanes (2006 - 2008).

All Blacks Selector Grant Fox is an All Blacks legend. He played 189 matches for Auckland from 1982 - 1993 scoring 2,746 points, and 46 Tests for the All Blacks from 1985 - 1993. He was part of the 1987 Rugby World Cup-winning All Blacks side and finished his All Blacks career with a then record 645 points. He has remained prominent in rugby since his playing days: he runs ground signage company Carnegie Sports; has been on the coaching staff of Auckland and the Blues, as well as a Blues Board Member; and most recently was a highly-respected comments man on SKY Television.

Will the surge in legal blogs be noise drowning out the signal ...

With the recent LexisNexis survey signaling a coming surge in the number of law blogs, there's been much discussion this week as to what will become of the valuable online legal commentary and dialogue we experience from law blogs.

Media consultant and attorney, Bob Ambrogi, expects law blogs offering little value to come and go as they have in the past. Lawyers publishing such blogs will quickly lose their excitement to do so.

New York City criminal lawyer, Scott Greenfield, offered his take again this morning.

If the blawgosphere is turned into a massive and fruitless marketing initiative by over-moneyed and under-mindful law firms, big, small or solo, it's conceivable that the noise will drown out the signal, turning off those who might otherwise be inclined to spend some time here. Nobody wants a channel showing only commercials.

There is room for new blawgs. There will always be room for great blawgs, assuming the blawgosphere isn't crushed under a pile of crap.

To which New York plaintiff's trial lawyer, Eric Turkewitz, replied in a comment to Greenfield:

Nah. You will never see them, as they will be islands unto themselves. Those that fail to engage others will be lost, and since engagement is counterintuitive to marketing (You want me to send my readers away?!), the vast majority will simply be pixels known only to their "writers."

The discussion reminded me of a post earlier this summer from Gideon Gartner, founder of Gartner, Inc., the information technology research and advisory company, as to whether social networking may be bad for your health.

What might have once been called 'intellectual networking' seems to have been displaced by today's 'social networking.' During my years living on our planet, ideas often led to deep thinking, discussions, and of course, arguments. I would often analyze these later, attempting to reach useful conclusions. But these days, a flood of brief spoken or published ideas, stated with little or no supporting evidence and followed by inane 'comments' from seemingly random observers with little or no stature, threaten my productivity.

If this is what we call 'social networking' (SN), the rapidly growing popular trend, I fear for our future. With the entire world seemingly jumping on the SN bandwagon, this may soon overwhelm us, impacting productivity to the point where society is threatened. Neal Gabler, the author of Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, has recently said that social networking is drowning us in information, as we have little time (or desire) to process it! Many other intellectuals, while still a minority, have reached similar conclusions, that social networking is drowning us in information, as we have little time (or desire) to process it.

SN has contributed to books being read less and less. We are too busy linking to Facebook and Twitter; LinkedIn may have marginally greater merit; Google+ is still untested and blogging continues to crowd out responsible journalists. Authors themselves may be trending towards posting rather than going through the agonizing process of book-writing, especially when publishing volume is contracting. All in all, books and magazines which are addressing the world's social networking issues are mostly supportive as they capitalize on the rapidly growing base of social networking addicts and fans.

I am not as pessimistic as Gartner, at least as it pertains to law blogs. Law blogs are advancing legal dialogue.

Rather than limiting legal publishing to academics writing for law school law reviews and the handful of lawyers who clear the gates to write for the major legal publishers, blogs have opened the door for practicing lawyers with niche expertise to share their practical insight and commentary.

Other social media, whether it be Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook, enables amplification of the deeper blogged commentary. These social media also allow greater engagement between legal bloggers so to build and nurture relationships among legal bloggers.

Legal blogging benefits the legal profession as well as the public at large. Both have greater access to the law through insight and commentary they could never have experienced before.

With the good number of law blogs we have and the surge in the number of law blogs coming we're of course going to see a significant number of law blogs that contribute little, if anything, to legal dialogue. They'll amount to little more than noise.

But the body of valuable legal information, insight, and commentary is unquestionably going to grow. Not only will we benefit as we do today from reading and writing blogs, but we'll benefit in years to come from tapping into this knowledge via technology that is still evolving.

Chael Sonnen unimaginatively takes shot at Chicago Cubs

When touting UFC on Fox 2, Chael Sonnen took a shot at the Chicago Cubs, a team who plays 5.5 miles away from the United Center, where Sonnen will fight Mark Munoz. (He takes the shot at the very beginning of the video.)

What disappoints me about that is it's lack of imagination. Using the Cubs as a punching bag is for amateurs, and Sonnen is a highly regarded professional in the world of trash talk. Dana White called him the Muhammad Ali of MMA for his ability to sell a fight. Ali would never go for such an obvious joke.

C'mon, Chael. Do your research. Learn my city, and make better jokes than that.

Thanks to Chicago's MMA.

HP Plugs Security Hole With LaserJet Firmware Update, Says No Record Of Printers Set Ablaze By Hackers

laserjetRemember when researchers said a security vulnerability could allow hackers to remotely take over Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers and even cause them to burst into flames? Fun times, for sure. Of course, HP was quick to point out that the researchers had it all wrong, lamented the "sensational and inaccurate reporting" surrounding the supposed security flaw and said not a single customer had reported any instances of unauthorized access to its LaserJet printers.

Leader of the liberal Yabloko party Grigory Yavlinsky gestures while speaking during a rally to protest against alleged vote rigging at Bolotnaya Square, on an island in the Moscow River adjacent to the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. About 1,000 demonstrators demanding a rerun of parliamentary elections gathered Saturday on a square in central Moscow for a second weekend of protests against the fraud-tainted vote, and demonstrations took place in at least two other cities. (AP) ? About 1,000 demonstrators demanding a rerun of parliamentary elections gathered Saturday in central Moscow for a second weekend of protests against Russia's fraud-tainted vote, a comparatively small crowd that underlined the challenge to the opposition of keeping up public pressure on authorities.

The turnout was far below the nationwide protests last Saturday in at least 60 cities, including a dramatic gathering of tens of thousands in Moscow, the largest show of public anger in post-Soviet Russia. Demonstrations took place in at least two other cities on Saturday.

The protests follow the Dec. 4 national parliamentary elections, in which the ruling United Russia party lost a significant share of its seats in the State Duma, though it retained a narrow majority. Opposition forces claim even that was unearned, supported by reports from local and international observers of widespread vote-count irregularities and outright fraud.

Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the Yabloko party that failed to make it into the parliament and staged Saturday's rally, said it had filed hundreds of appeals to protest the vote results. "We need a new election law and new, honest elections," he told the rally at Bolotnaya Square, on an island in the Moscow River a few hundred meters (yards) from the Kremlin.

The combination of fraud and United Russia's declining fortunes galvanized opposition groups that have been repressed under Putin's 12 years of rule. After several nights of unauthorized protests that police broke up harshly, Moscow authorities showed unprecedented largesse in granting permission to hold several large protests last weekend.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this week effectively rejected calls to rerun the election, declaring that its result reflected the people's will. The new Duma is to have its opening session on Wednesday.

President Dmitry Medvedev, who is stepping aside to allow Putin to run for a new term in the Kremlin, warned Saturday against attempts to "delegitimize" the government, saying it will mean the collapse of the state. Like Putin earlier this week, he promised to modernize Russia's political system, adding that the "old model has exhausted itself."

Medvedev on Friday had a phone call with President Barack Obama, who raised questions about the disputed election and welcomed his promise to investigate whether fraud had occurred, the White House said.

Taking a defiant note at a meeting with United Russia activists Saturday, Medvedev said he had told Obama Russia doesn't care about the U.S. assessment of the vote and that the U.S. criticism was unacceptable.

"When we hear lectures in the worst traditions of the Cold War, it causes indignation," Medvedev said.

Unimpressed by the government's vague promises of liberalization, the opposition aims to keep up the pressure with a series of protests, and is placing much hope on a Moscow rally Dec. 24 that organizers believe will attract at least 50,000 people.

Protesters on Saturday repeated demands of last weekend's protest, calling for a repeat election, the punishment of those responsible for vote fraud and the release of political prisoners. Speakers angrily dismissed Putin's comment this week in which he claimed protest leaders were acting at the West's behest and sarcastically said he thought the white ribbons many protesters wear as an emblem were condoms.

"He was calling us condoms financed by the State Department, crooks that are trying to steal the country, and I think that this is the reaction that shows he was scared," said Ilya Ponomarev of the Left Front opposition movement

"We are speaking here against vote fraud, which is a political HIV," Yabloko leader Sergei Mitrokhin said, citing an inscription Yabloko printed on white ribbons handed out to protesters.

Russian news media also reported about 500 people held a protest in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, several hundred gathered in Yekaterinburg in the Urals and about 100 tried for an unauthorized rally in Samara, where four demonstrators were arrested.

The wave of protest comes less than three months before Putin is to run for a new term as president, the post he held in 2000-2008, and indicates his return to the Kremlin may be less easy than initially assumed for the man who has dominated Russia over the past dozen years.

On Saturday, the Communist Party nominated its leader Gennady Zyuganov to run for president. Zyuganov forced Boris Yeltsin into a run-off in the 1996 presidential election and although the Communists' support has declined since then, he could attract a protest vote against Putin.

Report: Barbara Walters to retire in 2012

    Cindy Ord / Getty Images

    By Courtney Hazlett

Might we have seen one of the last of Barbara Walters' "Most Fascinating People" specials? Perhaps, if a report coming out of TMZ is accurate.

The website is saying that Walters just interviewed President Barack Obama and?that she told him, "I need one more interview with you because I'll be retiring next year." The announcement wasn't part of the interview itself, but rather a comment she made during a break while her microphone was still on, which allowed others to overhear it.

ABC News spokesman Jeff Schneider told TMZ, "She has been joking every year since the Clinton Administration about retiring. Anyone who just did a day trip to Syria, a 90-minute prime-time special last night an interview with the president and first lady today hardly sounds like someone retiring from anything."

Do you think it's time for her to retire? Or should she work for a few more years? Tell us on our Facebook page!

HBO buys Leonardo DiCaprio executive-produced series (Reuters)

LO ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Leonardo DiCaprio is coming to HBO -- in a behind-the-camera capacity, anyway.

HBO is developing a drama series based on the 2009 Josh Bazell novel "Beat the Reaper," with DiCaprio executive-producing.

"Ocean's Thirteen" screenwriters Brian Koppleman and David Levien are penning the project, as well as co-executive producing.

Also executive-producing are Jennifer Davisson Killoran, of DiCaprio's production company Appian Way, and Julie Yorn, of LBI Entertainment, along with new Regency's Arnon Milchan and New Regency alum Bob Harper and Hutch Parker.

New Regency initially acquired the rights to the book, as a potential starring vehicle for DiCaprio.

The Bazell novel revolves around a medical resident in the Federal Witness Protection Program, who describes his history as a mafia hitman through a series of flashbacks. In the present time, he must save a mob acquaintance from his past in order to prevent him from revealing the resident's location to the local crime boss.

    Deadline first reported the news.
