At 19, I walked into the Opera house for the first time and I could almost smell the dust in the red velvet curtains from the 17^th century.?? Romeo and Juliet sang in supernatural octaves and the audience?s emotion swelled with every high note.

The opera began as royal entertainment in 17^th century France.? Marriages and political visits were occasions when the opera would take place.? The royals called for these extraordinary productions to be performed during such occasions to impress other royals and dignitaries, to show off their power.

Enchanting music, dance, lavish costumes and stage effects melded together to create this new form of upper-class entertainment.? Special effects on the set were created with ropes, pulleys, and counterweights. Stories and themes were taken from Greek and Roman mythology.

Opera had its beginnings in Italy and France.? The very start of it all is credited to an Italian group called the Camerata.? They were a group of writers, artists, and musicians who would meet up to discuss Greek tragedy.? In Italian, the word ?opera? means ?work.?? The word?s meaning is fitting, since every specific part of the opera is, and always has been so elaborate.

The staging was no exception.? One thing that set opera staging apart from that of other musical performances was the audience participation ? involving staged dances.? The first opera house was Teatra San Cassiano in Venice, which opened in 1637.? Large stage elevators would allow for the heavy sets to quickly be changed during performances.

Romney Lowers Threshold For Military Involvement In Iran, Says He?d Back Israeli Strike

Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem, a top foreign policy advier to Mitt Romney said the GOP presidential nominee would support an Israeli decision to attack Iran?s nuclear program. The right-wing adviser Dan Senor said Iran should not be able to attain a nuclear ?capability? ? a significant break in language from state U.S. policy.

Senor told reporters:

If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision.

In a follow-up statement, Senor said, ?We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so,? but that an American attack should remain an option.

While Obama has said an Iranian nuclear weapon is ?unacceptable,? declaring a nuclear ?capability? an American ?red line? that would trigger war sets a lower threshold for U.S. military involvement. The CIA has laid out a specific definition, but the ?nuclear capability? language is a complex issue. The word ?capability? has a special meaning in the non-proliferation context, but it?s not always clear exactly what. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), one of the Senate?s most vociferous Iran hawks, said this year, ?I guess everybody will determine for themselves what that means.? Hawks in Congress pushed a bill this year to shift the official U.S. ?red line? to a nuclear ?capability.?

During an appearance with Romney in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netnayahu said he agreed with Romney?s approach, falsely claiming that ?all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota.? U.N. sanctions have delayed Iran?s nuclear progress. A U.N. ban on selling Iran weapons technologies appears to have set back their ballistic missile programs as well.

President Obama considers a potential Iranian nuclear weapon a threat to both the security of the U.S. and its allies in the region, as well as the nuclear non-proliferation regime. And he?s vowed again and again to keep all options on the table to deal wtih it. U.S., U.N. and Israeli intelligence estimates give the West time to pursue a dual-track approach of building international pressure and using diplomacy to resolve the crisis. Questions about the efficacy and potential consequences of a strike have led U.S. officials to declare that diplomacy is the ?best and most permanent way? to resolve the crisis. Obama has also reaffirmed Israel?s ?sovereign right to make its own decisions about what is required to meet its security needs.?

Romney has long supported military involvement in the Middle East and still defends President Bush?s preventative invasion in Iraq. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Romney said, ?President Bush took action which he believed, based upon the information that was available to him, both from British intelligence and intelligence in our country and around the world, that Saddam Hussein presented a very serious threat to the world, including the potential of weapons of mass destruction.?

"Climate change is very real," she confessed as she embraced cap and trade's massive tax increase on Michigan industry - at the same time claiming, against all the evidence, that it would not lead to an increase in manufacturing costs or energy prices. "Global warming creates volatility. I feel it when I'm flying. The storms are more volatile. We are paying the price in more hurricanes and tornadoes."

Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat - Michigan

The latest poll result from Rasmusen is a little disconcerting:

Incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow is still outrunning her two leading Republican challengers in Michigan's U.S. Senate race.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Michigan Voters shows Stabenow with 47% support, while businessman Clark Durant picks up 39% of the vote. Four percent (4%) like another candidate in the contest, and 10% are undecided.

I can't imagine how anyone who pays the slightest amount of attention to what is going on in Washington could vote for Debbie Stabenow. Seriously.

Also, she has gained nation notoriety when Citizens Against Government Waste named Stabenow "Porker of the Month" in March of this year.

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day earlier this month, and in recognition of the potfuls of taxpayer gold that have been squandered on subsidizing ill-advised green energy programs, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) Porker of the Month for submitting an amendment that would have extended federal subsidies for alternative fueling stations, biofuels, refined coal, energy-efficient appliances, wind power, and similar initiatives.

Sen. Stabenow's ultimately unsuccessful amendment exemplifies the public policy fallacy gripping the Obama administration and many lawmakers, which holds that the key to unlocking a green energy surge is simply more taxpayer money.

"The past six months have been marred by examples of the futility of picking winners in energy markets...Failures at Solyndra, Ener1, Beacon, Tesla, Amonix, Evergreen Solar, SpectraWatt, SunPower, and others make it obvious that the government has about as much chance of stumbling across a four-leaf clover as it does of being successful as a venture capitalist," declared CAGW President Tom Schatz.

There still is a lot of time between now and November but it has to be said....

Really Michigan? The citizens of Michigan would actually vote to return Stabenow to Washington where she can continue feeding at the taxpayer trough?

Romney can expect warm Israeli reception

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday - and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments - and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials. Romney attended swimming events in London on Saturday morning ahead of his planned flight to Tel Aviv.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. The Romney campaign said the likely GOP nominee only had time in his schedule to meet with one Palestinian leader and that Fayyad has an existing relationship with Romney. The Abbas camp did not offer an explanation for why no meeting was planned.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

On world stage, Olympic culture clashes inevitable

LONDON (AP) ? In a way it was inevitable, given the size and scope of the event that is taking place in this most multicultural of capitals.

But the Olympic-sized political gaffes and cultural goofs already registered before the games officially open Friday have proven one thing in the globalized planet of the early 21st century: Even with the best of intentions, organizing an offense-free Olympics is nearly impossible.

On Thursday, three issues rankled some Muslim activists:

?A "Welcome to London" street sign written in Arabic that was virtually indecipherable, with the characters written backward.

?A ruling that one of Saudi Arabia's two female athletes couldn't wear a headscarf for her judo competitions because of safety concerns.

?And an insistence that two Moroccan soccer players produce a urine sample for doping tests, even though they were fasting for Ramadan and needed more than two hours to produce it.

"The reason we won the games was because London was diverse, it's where the world is represented," said Mohammed Shafiq, head of the Manchester-based Ramadan Foundation, which seeks to forge understanding among Britain's different communities.

"But," he said, "we're seeing decisions that are being made that will have a negative impact on the beliefs of Muslim athletes, and Muslim fans and officials."

Already, the International Olympic Committee and Prime Minister David Cameron have apologized profusely for the most blatant mistake to date: displaying South Korea's flag rather than North Korea's on a giant screen ahead of Pyongyang's inaugural women's soccer match Wednesday night. The flap sent the North's team off the pitch for an hour in protest.

On Thursday, two other geopolitical gaffes surfaced: Welsh soccer player Joe Allen was listed as English in the official program, and some athletes who were born in then-Soviet Ukraine were listed as having been born in the "Ukraine region" of Russia. Others were listed as coming from the Ukrainian cities of Lutsk and Lviv, which were described in the program as Russian. Similar mistakes were made for Georgia-born athletes.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishchenko said Kiev's embassy in London had complained to the IOC and requested corrections.

"The word 'region' is obviously excessive," he tweeted, referring to the centuries of Russian dominance that ended when Ukraine gained its independence in 1991. "It's an incompetent mistake even from the point of view of English grammar."

London organizing spokeswoman Joanne Manning-Cooper acknowledged the mistakes but tried to put them in context.

"We've got 200 competing nations from all over the world, a multitude of religions," she said. "Over the past seven years we've worked hard to make sure this really is everyone's games, no matter where you're from or what your beliefs."

Part of that involved creating a committee of representatives of different faiths to ensure no one would feel excluded by the games. But given the vast numbers of people and events involved ? 650 sporting events, nearly 10,000 athletes over 17 days ? mistakes are bound to happen.

"If we make mistakes, we fix them immediately and aim to ensure they never happen again," she said.

For Saudi Arabia's Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, it's not so much a mistake as a safety ruling that could jeopardize her participation in the games.

On Thursday, the International Judo Federation ruled she couldn't wear a headscarf during competition because of safety concerns given the strangleholds and chokeholds that are often used.

Shahrkhani is one of the first two Saudi women allowed to participate in the Olympics; the other, Sarah Attar is expected to wear a headscarf when she competes in distance running.

Asian judo federations have previously allowed Muslim women to wear the hijab during major competitions, but the IJF decided against it this time around.

"Someone wearing a headscarf could put their opponent at a disadvantage if the headscarf gets in the way and you're not able to grip properly," said Szandra Szogedi, a Hungarian fighter who just missed out on the Olympics and is helping the Hungarian team during the games.

Judo fighters typically struggle to get a grip on each other's uniform and frequently reach behind their opponent's head to get a dominant position on the base of their neck.

"But on the other hand, the headscarf could be dangerous for the woman wearing it, because if I try to strangle you and somehow pull your scarf around into a more dangerous position," she said.

Shafiq, of the Ramadan Foundation, said allowances should be made particularly for people of different faiths.

"It's not about political correctness," he said. "It's about being aware of the sensitivities around this, and positively embracing the diversity."

is every family called to adopt?

?Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:? to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.? Today I wanted to write a post about staying at home.? You know, the euphemism kind of ?staying at home,? which simply means that you?ve got kids and you don?t send them to daycare.? I sure wish we could come up with a different euphemism, seeing as how I ?stay at home? but am hardly ever, no never, at home.? Oh well. I wanted to write a blog post about GRACE.? Grace for moms who stay at home, but more pointedly, grace for moms who don?t.? I?ve been super convicted lately that way too many mommas who ?work outside of the home? (another insufficient euphemism) feel awfully judged and guilty and jealous and straight-up condemned, inadvertently or not by those of us who haven?t held a job since giving birth.? And vice versa, believe it or not.? Vice versa, indeed. Grace for moms who don?t stay at home.? And grace for moms who do. But this isn?t a post about staying at home or not staying at home.? It is, however, most definitely a post about GRACE. You see, a long time ago when I asked the Lord if He wanted me to stay at home with our imaginary kids (they?re real now; then they weren?t), He said, YES.? I heard Him plain as day, and so did Dan. But lately, I?ve asked Him another question that reminds me so so much of that one.? I guess that?s why I have been ever-so-surprised to hear Him answer, this time, NO. The question?? If He wants us to adopt. What I?m about to say, I find it painfully hard to type out, much less publish for others to read.? You see, for a while, I was convinced that EVERY Christian family MUST adopt.? I can quote you the statistics.? Suffice it to say, that would SOLVE the orphan epidemic, at least numerically. So what does one do when they believe that every Christian family should adopt, but they haven?t adopted?? And they pray like crazy about it, but they start to sense that, for one reason or another, their family isn?t going to?? At least not today? I don?t know what one does.? But my guess is they either change what they believe, or live in condemnation. So here goes nothin:? ?God does not call every Christian family to adopt.?? There.? I said it.?? And get this:? The second line to that statement is not, ?Only the obedient and cool ones.? If you or I are searching for whether or not God is leading us to adopt, (or to stay at home, or anything else, for that matter), one very simple litmus test can go a long way in helping us sort that out:? Is the feeling motivating you to do it, condemnation?? In other words, do you feel guilty or shameful or bad about yourself when you consider the other alternative (not adopting, not staying-at-home)?? ?? no one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.? ?Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus?? God simply does NOT condemn.? If it is condemnation you are feeling, it is not from Him.? If you are trying to sort out if the desire to adopt is from Him, if it reeks of condemnation, it has an altogether different source.? Let?s clear up one thing for sure:? Holy Spirit conviction does not resemble Satanic condemnation.? And allow me to say one thing more:? Neither does Holy Spirit conviction resemble human pressure. No, Satan most certainly does not want an orphan to be rescued? But it might be worth it to him if he could make me forfeit my freedom in Christ to the enslavement of condemnation, AND make me push past the leadership of the Holy Spirit working in my spouse to the destruction of our relationship.? (The very relationship that shows the world ? earth and heavenlies included ? a picture of the mysterious unfailing love Jesus Christ has for His Bride, the church.) I am not ready to say that the Reeves family will never adopt.? My heart yearns to almost every day.? We can meet for coffee and I?ll tell you all the reasons why.? But I will also tell you all the reasons why I believe wholeheartedly He has spoken over me, No.? Or at least, Not today. Here in this place of the No.? And I will not spend my time here waddling in the mud of condemnation and guilt and shame. For heavens sake, the place of the No is an open field! There are so many places to go All sprouting forth from the free soil in the hands of our Loving Father who adopted us as dearly loved daughters and sons for life by His own blood. There is just no telling what He might do.? For orphans.? Though us.? Whom He has told, No. If you sense He is telling you to adopt, and it is in unity with your spouse (if you have one), by all means do not hesitate!? GO!? You can do it!? Put a little Holy Spirit power to it!? (Read: That was a joke. I was a cheerleader and enjoy self-deprecating humor.) But all joking aside, for those of us who do not sense Him telling us to adopt (at least not today), let?s embrace the open field of the No.? Explore ALL the possibilities of ways to live out James 1:27.? Start by picking up some pom-poms and cheering our hearts out for those who are adopting!? NOT avoiding them when we see them at Target because they make us feel guilty.? Ouch. If you don?t know what to do, I invite you to get to know my friends at Families Outreach, or other non-profit orphan care ministries like them.? Let?s not confuse God?s direction not to adopt, with Him saying not to do anything.? Not sensing God?s leadership to adopt (at least not today) has left me feeling condemned and shameful at worst, helpless and useless at best.? But I can?t get out of my head something that Chris Caine said at Passion this past year:? In regards to human trafficking, a cause for which Chris has given over her entire life, she charged all of us listening with more passion than I?ve ever heard her speak (and that is saying A LOT), to do one thing:? PRAY.? Whether you sit reading this with seven adopted sons and daughters playing at your feet, Or you sit alone today wishing a spouse would share your heart?s desire, Or you sit at peace with your place in the open field of the No, Or you sit in a puddle of tears over the pain of infertility, Or you sit confused and broken over financial limitations, You don?t have to pray that God would call you to adopt.? He will take care of that if He so chooses. Chances are, if you?re so inclined to it that you?re asking Him to call you to do it, He already has. TEMPERANCE, Mich. (AP) ? Martin Tucker won his latest boxing match, but a bloody nose in the ring could send him to prison for bank robbery.

The FBI said it obtained a swab used to stop the bleeding and found that DNA matched Tucker's DNA on other evidence from a 2009 robbery at Monroe County Community Credit Union in Temperance, near the Michigan-Ohio border.

In a court filing, agent Robert Schmitz said he was aware of Tucker's bout in April in Toledo, Ohio, and obtained the "discarded" Q-tips swab.

Tucker's DNA matched DNA from a mask believed to have been used in the robbery and from the steering wheel of the getaway car, the FBI said.

Tucker, 32, of Toledo, was arrested this week and ordered held without bond Wednesday. The government alleges he wore a mask and had a handgun during the $5,400 robbery. Another suspect was indicted in the case in November.

Detroit FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet declined to discuss how Schmitz got the bloody swab. Defense attorney Haytham Faraj said there seems nothing illegal about acquiring it.

"We leave our fingerprints, bits of hair and skin all over the place. If you're a boxer, sometimes you leave your blood around," Faraj said in an interview Thursday.

He declined to comment on Tucker's alleged role in the robbery but doubts the blood sample really was necessary based on other DNA evidence.

"It is a dramatic twist. It makes for an interesting read," Faraj said.

He said Tucker, a light welterweight, is a roofer and part-time boxer. He's 1-6 in his last seven bouts, according to boxrec.com.

Bronco McKart, who also boxed that night in Toledo, knows Tucker and was surprised by the allegations.

"That's 'CSI Miami' stuff," McKart told the Monroe Evening News, referring to the bloody swab. "That's just amazing."
