Steven Powell leaves the courtroom of Judge Ronald Culpepper after appearing in the Pierce County Superior Court to have his case thrown out on Friday, March 30, 2012 in Tacoma, wash. Court documents were unsealed in connection with Powell's case on Friday showing that blood found at the home of Josh Powell, Steven Powell's son, belonged to Steven Powell's wife, who has been missing since 2009. (AP) ? Authorities investigating the 2009 disappearance of a Utah woman found her blood in the family home and a hand-written note in which she expressed fear about her husband and her potential demise, according to documents unsealed Friday.

The files raise further questions about why Susan Powell's husband was never charged in her disappearance before he killed himself and their two young sons in a gas-fueled inferno in Washington state earlier this year. Investigators in West Valley City, Utah, never arrested Josh Powell or even publicly labeled him as a suspect in his wife's disappearance.

A prosecutor in Washington state who was getting a first look at the files Friday said if it was his case, he would have charged Josh Powell with murder.

"There is direct evidence. There is circumstantial evidence. There is motive," said Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist. "There is everything but the body."

The documents, used as justification to search the home where Josh Powell was staying last year, detail a widespread case that investigators had built against him.

Shortly after Susan Powell disappeared, authorities found blood evidence on a floor next to a sofa and determined that it was Susan Powell's. The sofa appeared to have been recently cleaned, and two fans had been set up to blow on it.

Investigators found several life insurance policies on Susan Powell that totaled $1.5 million and determined that Josh Powell had filed paperwork to withdraw her retirement account money about 10 days after her disappearance.

The documents describe Josh Powell as unwilling to help in the investigation.

A safety deposit box used by Susan Powell had a hand-written letter titled "Last will & testament for Susan Powell," according to the documents. She wrote in that letter that she did not trust her husband and that they'd been having marital troubles for four years.

The letter also said that "if Susan Powell dies it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one," according to the documents.

Josh Powell always maintained his innocence and said he had taken their boys, then 2 and 4, on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures the night she disappeared.

One of the children, Charlie, told investigators in an interview shortly after his mom disappeared that she had gone on the camping trip with them but did not come back home and he did not know why, according to the files. A few weeks later, he told a church teacher with no emotion: "My mom is dead."

Investigators had found a gas can, tarps and a shovel in Josh Powell's vehicle shortly after the investigation began. Susan Powell's cellphone was also in the car, and Josh Powell "did not have an answer as to why," according to the documents. One person interviewed by police said Powell had once made comments about how to kill someone and dispose of the body.

Susan Powell's purse, keys, credit cards and other belongings were found in the couple's master bedroom.

West Valley City police on Friday refused to expand on any details revealed in the search warrant because the investigation is still ongoing, said Sgt. Mike Powell, who is not related to the Powell family.

"This case began as a missing person case and remains as such," he said. "But due to the suspicious nature ... murder and kidnapping have not been excluded."

Although police have only identified Josh Powell as a "person of interest," Sgt. Powell didn't rule out eventual charges against his father, Steven Powell.

Josh Powell moved with the boys to Steven Powell's home in Puyallup, Wash., but the grandfather was arrested and charged with voyeurism and child pornography last September. The boys were placed with Susan Powell's parents for their safety.

On Feb. 5 ? a few days after incestuous images found on Josh Powell's computer prompted a judge to order him to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation ? he locked a social worker out of his rental house, attacked the boys with a hatchet and ignited the home in an explosive, gas-fueled inferno. The social worker was not injured.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said his detectives would have arrested Powell "a long time ago" if this had been their case. He said a detective in Washington state was aware of the details gathered and local authorities had been anticipating that Utah investigators would pursue an arrest.

"Obviously, it's frustrating," Troyer said. "We were always waiting for the phone call to go arrest him."

The documents also describe how Steven Powell had an apparent obsession with his daughter-in-law. A locked cabinet in Steve Powell's bedroom contained multiple images of Susan Powell, including some of her in her underwear. Other images showed nude female bodies with Susan Powell's face copied onto them.

Another image showed Steven Powell masturbating to an image of Susan Powell.

Susan Powell wrote in her personal journals that she did not want Steven Powell involved in her life and wished that Josh Powell would sever ties with him. She described Steven Powell as a pedophile.

Jeff Bezos To Retrieve Apollo 11 Rocket Engines

Money is only wasted if you throw it in a pile and burn it. If it gets spent on something, regardless of how silly, then it stays in circulation; somebody will be using it to buy groceries, pay the mortgage, take his kids to the doctor, etc. A bunch of people will be employed on this project, and a bunch of companies will be selling goods and services. This is exactly the kind of stuff we want rich people to be doing with their money.

Someone's going to bring up the fact that you just described the broken window fallacy, so I'll preempt it:

1) It looks like you've fallen afoul of the broken window fallacy, but
2) the broken window fallacy only has meaning if the money would otherwise have been spent on something more meaningful than fixing your metaphorical broken window. Considering that this is reality, not Metaphorland, the broken window fallacy hardly ever has bearing on any situation.

In conclusion, I think you're exactly right.

Residence Financial loans With Bad Credit history ... - AskMTG.com

In spite of the reality that individual bankruptcy is acknowledged as the most harmful personal standing to be given, it is not the last nail in the coffin that so numerous individuals assume. In reality, even when making use of for residence financial loans with awful credit, personal bankruptcy does not have like a sizeable impact.

Of study course, this is not to say that the credit historical past of an applicant for a residential home financial loan is purely dismissed. There are definite implications to developing lousy credit score scores, but it is very important to observe that house financial loans soon after individual bankruptcy are no fantasy tale ? they are serious and, with an accurately ready application, can be secured.

Nevertheless, the consequences of becoming declared bankrupt contains significant fascination fees, minimal loan limitations and usually rigid reimbursement schedules. Having said that, in remaining capable to get dwelling financial loans permitted soon after individual bankruptcy, several applicants are eager to settle for these terms. It is truly worth noting that there are choices listed here as well.

Why Loan providers Will Overlook Credit rating Scores

It might possibly seem to be weird that loan providers that are looking at an software have to pay little focus to the credit rating rating an applicant has. There are a multitude of reasons why this is the case, nevertheless the core lies in that simple fact the poor credit does not consistently necessarily mean negative creditor. People looking for your home financial loans with lousy credit rating are not consistently the superior possibility their rating may advise.

Personal bankruptcy have to advise that the financial institution stay clear of that applicant (and many do). But loan providers know the purpose why an individual will get into economical trouble is not consistently irresponsible capital administration, so house financial loans when personal bankruptcy can nevertheless be a viable deal.

For instance, the economic downturn can force an organization to close. The courts can deem the proprietor bankrupt, but in truth of the matter it only came about given that of the state of the financial state. In these cases, it is likely to get property loans authorized immediately after bankruptcy mainly because the initial concern was out of the fingers of the applicant.

Obtaining the Suitable Financial institution

With this in head, the only actual matter for those applying for dwelling financial loans with terrible credit is to find the right lender offering the most beneficial home finance loan offer. Even though financial loans with lousy credit history are generally available from customary loan companies, their terms and conditions are inclined to be really inadequate. Fascination charges can be extremely big, with the worth of the bank loan usually remaining reduced.

But, on line lenders are inclined to be a good deal more accommodating when it will come to approving loans when individual bankruptcy. This is due to the fact, usually, online creditors do not actually care about credit rating ratings. All that is essential is evidence of work, confirmation of salary and lender particulars confirming a stay account.

The rationale this standards is so straightforward is that cash are transferred electronically into the financial institution account, despite the fact that the month-to-month repayments are also taken from the account right. And so extensive as the salary is substantial sufficient to go over the repayments, property loans accepted following bankruptcy is not a fantastic trouble.

Steps to Better Probabilities

Of training course, bettering your credit score ranking is also a major benefit to securing a dwelling mortgage with negative credit rating. This can be completed by searching for an evaluate from the credit history agency, and obtaining any discrepancies corrected. Also, prior to implementing for loans when individual bankruptcy, a collection of small personalized loans can be secured and repaid in full, which also boosts the rating.

Searching for out a cosigner can aid to make improvements to the self esteem of the lender, with quite a few residential home financial loans permitted subsequent to bankruptcy essentially dependent on a cosigner.

Of study course, the primary position is that a property mortgage with unhealthy credit history can be secured, even soon after individual bankruptcy, which is a serious boost to efforts to regain a good money position.

How do we know that Challenger Deep is lowest point on Earth?

Using a custom-built submersible, filmmaker James Cameron has successfully visited the Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the world's oceans? How do we know that there isn't somewhere deeper??

James Cameron, the Canadian director of "Titanic", "Aliens" ? and let's not forget, "The Abyss" ? recently emerged from his 35,756-foot dive to the Challenger Deep.

The Challenger Deep is the lowest point in the Mariana Trench, a gap between tectonic plates that stretches 1,500 miles along the western Pacific, and is thought to be the deepest chasm in all the world's oceans. At the bottom the pressure reaches over 15,000 pounds per square inch. By comparison, everyday pressure levels hover around 15 pounds per square inch.

How do we know that Challenger Deep is the deepest point on Earth. Can we be sure that there isn't a deeper spot somewhere?

We can't. Not absolutely. The Challenger Deep was first measured by the HMS Challenger expedition in 1875, a nearly 70,000-mile scientific voyage around the globe that laid the foundations for the modern science of oceanography. To probe the ocean's depths, the Challenger's crew used simple lead weights tethered by long ropes. For this purpose, the vessel carried 144 miles of rope. The first reported depth was 26,850 feet.

In 1951, that figure increased to 35,761 feet when another royal vessel, also named the HMS Challenger, remeasured the depth using a primitive form of sonar: A pulse of sound sent deep to bounce off the abyss, then back topside to the researchers awaiting its return. The official depth would change a few more times after, recently set on 36,070 feet, confirmed with modern sonar techniques, though with a margin of error approaching over 100 feet.

So it's possible that the measured depth of the Challenger Deep could change in the future, or that some other deeper point will be discovered somewhere else. After all, it was only in 1997 that researchers discovered the?Sirena Deep, which is also located in the Mariana Trench, which they measured at?35,210 feet, less than a thousand feet shallower than the Challenger Deep.

But it's probably unlikely that we'll find a new deepest point in on an entirely different part of the world.?Bathymetry, the science of underwater topography, has long been using sophisticated sonar equipment to create digital maps of underwater terrain. Sonar beams sent to the ocean floor are updated many times per second, and verified by Global Positioning Satellites. These maps clearly indicate the Mariana Trench as the deepest of its kind, and so far the Challenger Deep is its lowest measured point. Chances are, if the depth or the location of the world's deepest point ever does change, it won't be by much.

Does Online Advertising Really Work? | Business 2 Community

Does advertising on the internet really work??? We don?t need more hypey, bandwagon talk here.? We need the truth.

In talking to different business owners, there are some out there who doubt that it really works.

There are some who are old school (?we?ve always advertised in the yellow pages? or ?we rely on word of mouth? we don?t need to advertise on the internet!?) who feel that traditional ways of getting the word out about their company have worked just fine, thank you very much.

Necessity? The Father Of Opening Up Options?

Unfortunately for them, between the lousy economy (where word of mouth is no longer enough) and the non-use of yellow pages by most people these days, these folks are being forced to consider other avenues.

I have also spoken to those who have tried advertising on the internet and have concluded ?it doesn?t work!?

If you ask me, ?does online advertising really work?? you may be surprised by my answer.

My answer is? it depends.? From what I?ve seen, it depends on where you do it? and how you do it.

Let me explain.

Ways Internet Advertising Sometimes Does NOT Work

One of the times where I have NOT seen internet advertising work is? advertising in the wrong place.? That is the focus on this blog post.? In my next blog post, I?ll focus on another reason you have little success when you advertise online (how you advertise).

There are many different places you can advertise online?the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing), on websites, on Facebook, Linked In, and many other places.

Two Basic Places To Advertise

For this discussion, let?s focus on two basic places most businesses advertise online.? I will even limit the discussion to one main platform ? Google.

Google has two basic places you can advertise?

A.? On the search network (where people are looking for your products and services by entering keywords and ?Googling? something), and
B.?On the display network (those little ads and banners that show up on some websites).

A Huge Difference Between Places

The difference between these two areas is that the first category is full of people actively searching for solutions to their problems? which means your products and services.? Got a roof leak? You go online and figure out who to call.

The second area is called ?interruption marketing? because you are advertising to people on websites who are not looking for you at all.? They are doing something else?reading content on a web page.? You try to get their attention so they might consider your product or service.

This type of advertising works reasonably well if you are trying to reach a particular group of people.? For example, if you sell things to dentists, they don?t always search for dental things.? But, if you know where they hang out online (certain websites they visit), you can advertise directly to them there.

Don?t Make This Mistake? And Burn Through Your Cash!

Where internet advertising does NOT work (or at least is cost effective) as a general rule (yes Virginia, there are exceptions), is when a company advertises on general websites (for example, CNN), without trying to target certain websites that cater to certain group of people (dentists, automotive executives, small business owners, moms with young kids, etc.).

However, if you have a product that has impulse appeal (EX: Lose weight), you can do alright.? But, if you are a plumber, people won?t give your ad a second thought.

Unless you have deep pockets and are intent on ?branding? your business (getting general exposure so as to become memorable when they do need you), you must match who you are trying to reach with sites that cater to those folks.

Highway bill becomes House Republican headache

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bill that Republican leaders were promoting as the centerpiece of their job-creation agenda has instead turned into one of their biggest headaches, thanks largely to tea party conservatives who want to get the federal government out of transportation programs and hand them over to the states.

The House and Senate are heading toward a showdown next week that could result in a cutoff of federal highway and transit aid to states just as the spring construction season starts. The government's authority to spend money from the trust fund that pays for transportation programs, as well as its power to levy the federal gasoline and diesel taxes that feed the fund expire on March 31. Democrats estimate as many as 1.8 million jobs supported by those programs are at risk.

Neither side wants a shutdown, but House Speaker John Boehner has been unable to recruit enough Republicans to pass the GOP's overhaul of federal highway programs. The biggest group of holdouts are conservatives who want highway programs to be paid for entirely by federal gas and diesel taxes even though that might mean a nearly 40 percent cut in spending, because revenue from those taxes has declined.

Boehner's fallback plan is to pass a 90-day extension of current programs in order to give the House more time to line up votes for a comprehensive bill. But Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Thursday he's "not inclined" to go along with an extension. He urged the House to instead take up a $109 billion bill the Senate passed last week by a bipartisan, 74 to 22 vote.

"It's a good bill," Reid said. "But over in a big, dark hole we now refer to as the tea-party dominated House of Representatives ... they destroyed their own bill, and now they won't agree to take up our bill." House Republicans, he said, "are going to have to feel the heat of the American people."

GOP Rep. Mike Pence, who favors "devolution" of responsibility for transportation to state and local governments, said he's undecided about the five-year, $260 billion GOP bill because he's concerned that it isn't paid for entirely with user fees like fuel taxes and because he doesn't like the way it divvies up highway aid among states.

"I have no doubt the state of Indiana could do a better job for taxpayers and for drivers than the federal government in maintaining our roads in Indiana," said Pence, who is running for governor. "I supported the last highway bill. I think that roads mean jobs. But it's essential that we produce a bill that is both fair and fiscally responsible."

The House bill actually takes a large step toward giving states far more flexibility over how they spend federal aid, said Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., a member of the House Transportation Committee. Currently, about 80 percent of state highway programs are paid for with federal aid and 20 percent with state money. Lankford, who is supporting the bill even though he also wants to cede more authority to the states, said he'd eventually like to see that ratio reversed.

Boehner, R-Ohio, blamed his difficulty in passing the bill on the House's ban on "earmarks" ? provisions that used to be tucked into bills that direct spending to lawmakers' pet projects.

"When it comes to things like the (last long-term) highway bill, which used to be very bipartisan, you have to understand it was greased to be bipartisan with 6,371 earmarks," Boehner told reporters. "You take the earmarks away, and guess what? All of a sudden people are beginning to look at the real policy behind it."

Boehner wants to use revenue from expanded oil drilling to help make up a shortfall between federal fuel tax revenues and transportation program spending. But the drilling proposal raises only about $4.3 billion over 10 years, while the gap between revenue and spending in his bill is more than $40 billion.

"The problem with the Senate bill is that it doesn't address the issue of rising gas prices and energy," Boehner said. "We believe that if we're going to reauthorize the highway bill, American energy production ought to be a critical part of it."

Several Republican lawmakers said they expect the Senate to go along with the House's 90-day extension despite Reid's hesitation.

It?s Not About the Law, Stupid

On the other hand, I?d suggest that there is an equally powerful countervailing force at work on the justices. Because, as it happens, the current court is almost fanatically worried about its legitimacy and declining public confidence in the institution. For over a decade now, the justices have been united in signaling that they are moderate, temperate, and minimalist in their duties. From Chief Justice Robert?s description of himself as just an ?umpire? and his speeches about humility and the need for unanimity, to Stephen Breyer?s latest book Making Our Democracy Work?a meditation on all the ways the courts depend on public confidence. Roberts even nodded at that court-wide anxiety by devoting most of his 2011 State of the Judiciary report to issues of recusal and judicial integrity, and by reversing his own policy on same-day audio release, in order to allow the American public to listen in on the health care cases next week (albeit on a two-hour delay). That means that the court goes into this case knowing that the public is desperately interested in the case, desperately divided about the odds, and deeply worried about the neutrality of the court. (Greenhouse points to a Bloomberg News national poll showing that 75 percent of Americans expect the decision to be influenced by the justices? personal politics.) To hand down a 5-4, ideologically divided opinion just before the Republican and Democratic Party conventions, would?simply put?prove that 75 percent correct, and erode further the public esteem for the court. Justice Clarence Thomas doesn?t worry much about things like that. I suspect Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kennedy worry quite a lot.

California's drug pushers have found a brilliant way to win liberal hearts and minds: form a union

Sadly, pot dealing Long Beach looks less like this and more like downtown Kabul

It?s the oft-heard cry of the pro-marijuana set: ?legalise or decriminalise cannabis and all the crime will go away.? Well, California has tried it and some people don?t agree. Particularly the poorer, non-Caucasian folks who have to live where it?s sold. You know, the people that liberals are supposed to care about?

News has just broken that?Los Angeles is moving to crack down on ?pot shops? that have opened up since California effectively decriminalised marijuana in 2010. There are roughly 900 marijuana dispensaries operating in the city ? outnumbering Starbucks in some neighbourhoods. I lived in West Hollywood for a fair bit last year and never spotted a single one in this rich, white enclave. Head to Venice Beach or Long Beach and it?s like you?ve walked onto the animated set of Yellow Submarine.

Jose Huizar, a Councilman for Long Beach, is concerned about the number of dispensaries that have appeared near schools, hospitals and other sensitive areas in his district. Ordinances have been introduced to control where they are built, but Los Angeles has failed to enforce them (partly because the status of the drug in California conflicts with Federal law). The result is that the pot shops have introduced yet more crime into already troubled neighbourhoods. You don?t have to have Rick Santorum?s prissiness to recognise that places that sell mind altering substances tend to ?lower the tone.?

The reason is that wherever you find business associated with vice, you get criminal activity. The production of hard core porn is legal in Los Angeles, but it still has a strong association with organised crime because the folks who make those movies, or buy them, tend to like drugs, booze and violence, too. The famous 1986 Meese Report, commissioned by the Reagan administration, found a ?substantial? link between crime syndicates and pornography, while it?s axiomatic that people who ?star? in porn often work in prostitution, too (and not always willingly).

Even if a narcotic is legal and taxed, there will always be people prepared to offer a purer quality substance at cheaper levels. In fact legalisation creates a whole new black market dynamic as non-licensed sellers compete with the government ? look at the global phenomenon of blackmarket cigarette sales.

And that?s what?s happening in Los Angeles right now. Despite the existence of marijuana on prescription (which, to be fair, Huizar advocates) and the pot shops, it will always be cheaper and easier to score drugs on the street. Add to this the fact that by their very existence the pot shops advertise the use of drugs, we?re going to see an upswing in interest among adolescents and vulnerable people.

That?s why Huizar doesn?t want people pushing (sorry, ?selling?) marijuana in his neighbourhood. And it will always be among the poor that we?ll see a concentration of outlets if this substance is legalised. Think about it, where are all the hard core porn shops in Britain? In Tunbridge Wells? Chipping Norton?

Here?s the sting in this tale. The marijuana sellers have found a brilliant way to protect their industry: they?re going to unionise. It?s a genius move because whatever you do, if you?re in a union then liberals have to love you. It won?t take long before Joe Biden?s down there at the Strawberry Fields Co-op, Long Beach, on the picket line with a loud hailer crying, ?Let ma people go!?

If only the bankers on Wall Street formed a union ? those crooks would be untouchable.

(AP) ? Since the credit crisis of 2008, everyone has been waiting for the banks to start lending money again. It's finally happening, but there's a catch: Businesses are afraid to spend it.

Bank loans to businesses grew 10 percent last year after dropping 19 percent in 2009 and 9 percent in 2010, according to the Federal Reserve. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo confirmed the growth in their latest financial results.

But much of the loan growth comes from lines of credit, not traditional loans. And instead of tapping available credit to power up plants, open factories and hire people, businesses are waiting.

At the same time, they are hoarding cash. JPMorgan, the nation's largest bank, held a record $200 billion in business deposits at the end of last year, up 35 percent from the same time a year earlier. Wells Fargo and Bank of America also say deposits from middle-market businesses have soared.

"Our business customers are feeling optimistic," says Perry Pelos, head of commercial banking for Wells Fargo. "But I'm not seeing any boom yet because they are still a little uneasy about the future."

Even successful business owners have found it difficult to adopt the easy confidence of the years before the deep and bruising recession. They want to see more improvement in the economy before they take great risks again.

Jon Schlegel, owner of a Colorado brunch restaurant called Snooze Eatery, says his customers are buying more Bloody Marys and mimosas to go with the popular and more expensive chilaquiles Benedict ? his take on eggs Benedict, stacked with steak and tortillas and topped with fresh salsa and cotija cheese.

He's noticed more out-of-town visitors in his restaurants on recent weekends than in the past couple of years. Yet Schlegel is careful about every expense. He pays for supplies and meets payroll with the restaurants' own cash flow rather than borrowing.

"I've got to watch my costs. Meat prices are rising, and coffee prices are going up. If I raise my prices, will people keep coming and can I keep growing?" Schlegel says.

Schlegel's hesitance is common among small and independent businesses that struggled mightily during the Great Recession. For many business owners, it has been an arduous climb back just to survive, and that's made many of them averse to risk.

Analysts are watching bank loan growth closely because it provides clues about whether companies are preparing to hire. Unemployment remains high at 8.3 percent, though it has fallen from its recession peak of 10 percent.

Bank loans play a vital role in powering what economists call a virtuous cycle. Banks lend to companies, which spend to open factories to create widgets. Plants mean jobs, which leads to more money in people's pockets to spend. It re-energizes the economy.

Small and midsize businesses depend on bank loans to grow far more than large corporations, which can pay for their plans by selling bonds or stock in the financial markets.

In February, H.J. Heinz Co., the giant food company best known for its ketchup, raised $300 million by selling five-year bonds at an interest rate of just 1.5 percent. IBM, Procter & Gamble and McDonald's have all raised hundreds of millions of dollars recently by selling bonds and paying record-low interest rates.

Small and midsize businesses blamed banks for making matters worse when the recession struck by pulling back credit dramatically, and for not helping during the economic recovery by making credit freely available.

For their part, banks say regulations passed since the financial crisis have made it difficult for them to lend because they have to set more cash aside to cushion themselves against future losses.

On a bank's books, a line of credit that a business can tap as needed counts the same as a traditional, lump-sum loan. While they don't break out the numbers, banks say businesses are opening lines of credit but skittish about drawing on them.

In conference calls with analysts and reporters, bank executives have said recently that what they call the loan utilization rate, the percentage of available credit that businesses use, is unusually low. They do not release that number.

For instance, JPMorgan Chase said its loans to middle-market businesses grew 17 percent in the last three months of 2011, the sixth consecutive quarter of loan growth. But CEO Jamie Dimon warned analysts in January clients were still waiting to use the money.

"It's not utilization. It's new lines of credit for the most part," he said.

The amount of loans to middle-market businesses at Wells Fargo grew 15 percent in the last three months of 2011 from the same period a year earlier, to about $265 billion. But Wells executives, too, report that not enough of the money is being used.

Most of Chase's customers are like Schlegel: They seem to have enough money to run their businesses. That they are opening lines of credit in large numbers is a sign that they want to be prepared if there is a pickup in in demand.

For Schlegel, demand is just starting to creep back. After the success of his four brunch restaurants, he took out two loans late last year from JPMorgan Chase to open his fifth and sixth restaurants ? one in Colorado another in San Diego, his first out of state.

The two new restaurants allowed him to hire about 80 employees. But Schlegel is as skittish as the day he opened his first restaurant in 2006.

Scouting for new restaurant locations in 2011 proved more difficult than in 2010 and in 2009 because there were fewer spaces available and they were more expensive.

"I guess that's a favorable sign of an improving economy," says Schlegel. "I'm worried about how much we will be able to expand, and how easily I will be able to get my next loan."

Dortmund beats Fuerth with last shot of extra time

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -Substitute Ilkay Guendogan scored with the last shot of extra time for Borussia Dortmund to win 1-0 at second division Greuther Fuerth on Tuesday and reach the final of the German Cup.

Guendogan's shot from the edge of the penalty box hit the post and bounced off the back of goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzic into the net. Fejzic had come on just a couple of minutes before, with Greuther Fuerth believing the match was going into a penalty shootout.

Fejzic is renowned for his penalty-saving skills and can also score from the spot.

In the second semifinal, titleholder Bayern Munich visits Borussia Moenchengladbach on Wednesday.

Dortmund, the Bundesliga champion and front-runner, stayed on course for a domestic double and its third German Cup title.

"It was incredibly difficult," Dortmund's coach Juergen Klopp said. "We had to work very hard, they are a very good and very dangerous team. It was exactly what we expected."

After several near misses at promotion, Greuther Fuerth leads the second division and looks set to move up into the top tier.

Borussia dominated early possession and created a series of chances that went to waste.

Although Greuther Fuerth mostly defended well, Shinji Kagawa had an open header from six meters (yards) out sail high. Kagawa and Robert Lewandowski both failed to take advantage of a good cross in the 36th, and Kevin Grosskreutz had a header saved by Greuther Fuerth's goalkeeper Max Gruen.

Kagawa then shot wide and Grosskreutz wasted another opportunity.

Fuerth, playing a patient game, got a pair of late chances in normal time, but Olivier Occean missed both of them.

Occean shot high in the 112th minute and so did Jakub Blaszczykowski on the other side with three minutes remaining.
