If you would have told me?a couple of months ago that our first perfect score of 2012 belonged to a PSN downloadable title from the makers of Flow and Flower, I wouldn?t have believed you. Yet after beating the game, I can say that without question, Journey is (so far) the best game of 2012 and one that needs to be played by everyone.
Despite the perfect score, when I first started Journey, I didn?t like it. The first thing you?re taught once you begin is that you can move the camera with the Sixaxis controls, something that is very gimmicky and useless. Also,?the lack of direction at the outset can be slightly annoying as there?is no story to speak of and you are never told where to go. Yet that slowness of the first few minutes is meant to draw you into something much bigger, and it does that expertly. By having you just wander around in an empty desert, you begin to get attached to your character and you want them succeed.
As you take your unnamed hero through the game, you will be taken from?barren deserts, to dangerous underwater environments, and then into snowy mountains that will have you fighting the harsh elements. Each area is devoid of life, save for you, a few broken buildings, and a random AI character that will join you in your journey.
In one of the coolest implementations of multiplayer, Journey allows a random person to pop up into your game. So, you?ll be?wandering around?the desert?and suddenly, another player will appear. You can help each other out if you like, or just run away and leave them behind, but having someone beside you in this game, someone you?ll never truly meet, just helps to add to the amazing ambiance the game has.
Since Journey only features 3 environments, it will mean that you?ll reach the end credits within 3 hours. To most games on the market, this would be a huge detriment. With Journey however, it works perfectly. Such a short playtime meant that the developers (ThatGameCompany) could put as much work into the gameplay as they did everything else.
Because of this, Journey is the best looking downloadable title I have ever played. Even though the world is very barren, the sand you?ll travel through in the desert is awe-inspiring and the way the sun shines off of the sand will make you forget that you?re playing a video game it looks so realistic. Add in some snow effects that would make SSX jealous and you have a game that will have your eyes glued to the screen all the way throughout.
Now, as great as the graphics are, the music is Journey?s strongest point and will often times act as your guide. There will be times where it is completely absent, letting you know that you are safe. Other times, it will be a tremendous musical number that is nothing short of epic, taking you through a very treacherous area of the game that had my heart pounding faster than any other game in recent memory. Throughout, every single moment will have the perfect musical accompaniment playing, giving huge credence to the fact that you aren?t playing Journey, you are experiencing it.
If you?re looking for a fast paced action game, this isn?t it. Journey is the complete opposite. It is a laid back game that won?t tax your brain with difficult puzzles or give you any clear objectives. Instead, it will give you a perfect gaming experience that deserves to be played over and over again.
