Although baby showers originated in the US, they?re fast becoming popular here too. I adored my baby shower before having my first, Oliver-it was a chance to get all my friends and family together, feast on fabulous Greek food and simply enjoy time with loved ones before my baby arrived. This time round I feel a little too tired for another one but am looking forward to seeing all my friends once my new baby is here.
Here are my top tips for a perfect Baby Shower:
Organisation:
Ideally, the organisation of the baby shower should fall into the hands of a parent or good friend of the mum-to-be. Planning this occasion can be as big or small as you like depending on the budget so it?s important to think about who you may want to invite, and how many! I have such a diverse mix of friends from all over the country that I had to be involved in my own shower, ensuring no one was missed from London to Leeds. I also have a lot of close male friends too so broke the rules a bit and invited them along too!
When should you plan a baby shower?
A baby shower is best arranged in the final few months of pregnancy. Obviously not too near to the due date as all that excitement might get things moving too soon-I found around 8 months was a good time for me.
Where should the baby shower be held?
To make the mum-to-be feel more comfortable (and if she?s not involved in the shower herself) it would be good to arrange the occasion at her family home. Although this may be tricky to keep as a surprise, it will be worth it in the end. As hosting a party takes a lot of effort and planning, it might be wise to get a little team on board that can help with the process from initial planning to cleaning up at the end!
If the mum-to-be?s home is not a suitable venue, why not hire out a local church hall or function room where the staff may be able to assist you or hold it at a close friend?s place?
How much do I spend?
You don?t have to spend a small fortune to have a super fun baby shower, as many items can be bought on a budget, and if it?s a suprise, perhaps guests can share the cost of the party between them. When planning a party it?s best to consider the amount of guests, as the cost per head for food, goody bags, prizes, venue, decorations, cakes and invites can often become expensive when added in total at the end.I was lucky as my parents own restaurants so all the food was catered for by them and driven up to London, where we lived at the time of the shower. We also covered all of the other costs ourselves.
Present Ideas
A baby shower is a great opportunity for all the guests to give gifts to the mum-to-be and baby. The opening of the gifts was a fun ritual at my baby shower with everyone coooing over the gorgeous baby clothes and toys I?d received from friends and family! I also loved my pampering gifts which included vouchers for manicures, pedicures and massages which came in handy once baby was here and I needed to escape for some much craved ?me? time!
Are you planning a shower soon? Hope my tips come in handy!
