What Are the Health Benefits of Green Tea? - FOOD AND DRINK

The Chinese have known for many years that drinking ? and eating ? Camillia sinensis brings certain health benefits.

These benefits are not only general in terms, but also can help with specific ailments,

Free Radicals and Antioxidants.

Antioxidants are beneficial to our health as they lessen or inhibit the action of ?Free radicals? within the body.

These are incomplete molecules, or smaller particles, which are highly reactive with cells within our body. These molecules play an important role in a number of processes including the destruction of certain bacteria.

They are produced by the body to aid in metabolic processes, such as digestion and the conversion of food into energy. They are actually quite helpful in many of the body?s natural functions.

However, unless controlled, they can cause damage to our body?s natural defences and become a dangerous enemy. They have been associated with premature ageing, and other degenerative diseases.

Each free radical is capable of destroying an enzyme, protein, molecule or even damage cell structures so badly that immunity is impaired and DNA codes are altered.

The change of a cell?s DNA is known as ?mutation?, and is the natural method of evolution.

When too many cells are changed at one time, the body becomes susceptible to many damaging effects, which can include susceptibility to viruses, heart disease, cancers.

The greater amount of free radicals in our body than we would normally have depends on many influences, including stress (which we more frequently encounter in the ?modern? world), food additives, toxic chemicals in our food and water, smoking, and drinking alcoholic beverages.

These antioxidants act against the Free Radicals, and lessen the effects they have on our cells.

A highly effective source of antioxidants is Green Tea. This has far less oxidisation than the black or processed teas found in supermarkets, and so far more of the antioxidants naturally found in teas remain. The Scientific/Medical description of these antioxidants is ?Polyphenol Catechins?, which is something many may have heard about, but were unsure of the meaning.

The antioxidants neutralise the free radicals by adding an electron which neutralises and makes them harmless. They build up a protective barrier to them, and gives some protection for cell membranes and cell nuclei (including DNA), and help you stay healthy.

It is thought that these ?catechins? are more effective at countering free radicals than vitamins A, C, E and beta-carotene. Increasing your daily intake of antioxidants can significantly help neutralize the damaging effects of these free radicals.

Just remember that the lower the processing, including the fermentation (oxidisation) process, and later processing, the more of the helpful antioxidants will remain. And therefore be a healthier beverage.
